Breastfeeding, Immune Tolerance, and Allergenic Foods: Why Maternal Elimination Diets May Do More Harm Than Good

Breastfeeding remains crucial for infant health, especially in aspect of training immune respones to foreign compounds and reducing inflammatory reactions. Maternal dietary proteins promote tolerance to solid food in infants (however, there are cases where the same proteins can trigger allergies). Practice of excluding allergenic food from the maternal diet during breastfeeding is discouraged as a preventive measure due to its negative effects both for mother and child. Such diets should be limited to cases where allergies are confirmed by medical tests.
